Engine Water Ingress: Emergency Handling & Prevention

Engine Water Ingress: Emergency Handling & Prevention

Typical signs of water ingress: rough idle, white smoke, or a no-start after wading. Do not re-crank — hydro lock can bend connecting rods.

Emergency steps

  • Shut down, disconnect power, tow the vehicle out of water.
  • Drain oil and coolant; check for milky emulsion.
  • Inspect the air box and intake; open up the cylinders at a service point if needed.

Prevention

Avoid water above bumper height, check air filter sealing in rainy seasons, and consider a raised air intake.
